Obsidian - Jennifer L. Armentrout (Lux #1)

*4.5 stars*

Hello again!
This time I decided to pick up J.L.Armentrouts "Obsidian", the first in Lux series. Once again in paranormal YA genres. What makes it surprising pick for me, is that firstly, it's about aliens. I don't like aliens. Quoting Kat, they're meant to be slimy and green. Vampires and werewolves are as far as I go, I've never been a big fan of sci-fi. However, there has been a lot of talk about it recently, and it piqued my interest. Secondly, I generally try to avoid series not complete yet. The wait is a killer! Keeping it all in mind, I still went on and read it.

At the beginning it reminded me of Twilight. I can't but my finger on it. Something about Kats character - the unnoticeable, a bit clumsy and not overly beautiful girl, moving from big city into a really small town. Then there's Daemon - a hotty with an unreasonable grudge against Kat. The air is thick with sexual tension. BlaBla. However the moment Kat looked Dameon with terror in her eyes, asking if he'd start sparkling I was won over 100%. Go Kat!

I was so frustrated with Daemon I wanted to kill him at times and yell at Kat not to be so gooey-eyed - all signs, that I really lived into the story. For a moment I even I thought about dropping it. Fortunately I didn't.

Don't misunderstand, he never stopped being a complete and uber jerk. It was Katy who gained more confidence, making the bickering more enjoyable. They had character. Through the story the fight between heart and brain in our alien hero was the same-old-same-old, yet it was entertaining. As I mentioned earlier, aliens are new territory for me, so the characterization of Luxians seemed really interesting. I liked the authors explanations and stories about Lux. For some reason I kept imagining Dameon as blond. Must be the Mortal Instruments drawback...

Finally, I can not keep from mentioning Kats reviewing and blogging  hobby. I recognised myself in her as I'm sure a lot o other bloggers out there did, and I loved it!

Not a perfect five, but I consumed the whole book under 24 hours in two reads (from which the first one was about 7 hours long.) I got two and half hours of sleep and I don't regret a minute of it. For me it was creative and new, with lots of fun. I'm not sure I'll try the #0.5 "Shadows", but I'll definitely wait for the second book in August.

  3. Wow, incredible book. I loved every minute of it. Jennifer did an amazing job with every detail of this story. When I first heard about it my first thought was, really aliens? don't like already but boy was I wrong.
Daemon is the best character. He is crazy hot but a jerk. Katy gets to see glimpses of his sweet side and that's more than enough to make you swoon. Katy is a sweet blogger (wooop woop) with an attitude. She doesn't take anyone's crap, especially Daemon's. The combination of those two make for some heated arguing and heat period.
